What’s the difference between wide-calf boots and regular boots?
Full: “Wide-calf has an extended width which is truly great for all women with what I like to call an athletic calf. For as long as I can remember, I struggled to fit into knee high boots and I blamed it on years of kicking a soccer ball. Now, more shoe brands are designing for a wider calf so that even more customers can partake in the knee boots we often see coming back around for fall.
Depending on the brand, you might see an elastic panel on the side giving you about an inch in stretch to get into the boot. Some designers go as far as adding 2.5 inches. Most standard boots are 14, while wide-calf can go to a 16.5 inch circumference. This year, we have seen more and more shoe brands understand that offering a wide-calf option is just as important as a narrow or medium width option.”
Wahidi: “Wide-calf boots are diferent from standard boots, because as the name suggests, the calves are cut wider. These are great for plus size women as well as straight size women who happen to have muscular calves. Unfortunately, there is no standardization in the industry, but if a client of mine has calves wider that 15.5″ in circumference, we will order wide-calf boots. Always measure the largest part of your calf twice to ensure correct sizing.”
What should you look for in a wide-calf boot?
Full: “When looking for a wide-calf boot, first things first, you need to make sure you know the circumference of your calf. Grab a soft measuring tape and measure the widest part of your calf. This will help you navigate which boot is best for you. You’ll also want to consider if you have a high instep or high arch, which makes it more difficult to get into the boots. Look for options with zippers on the side to help you slip in and out even easier. Don’t be ashamed if you need assistance pulling them off, even the skinny calf ladies often need help!”
Wahidi: “As with anything, make sure to test the material. Look for luxe fabrics like leather or high quality PU. Avoid boots that are too shiny or sponge-like in texture.”
Nederveen: “As a stylist, I want to look for a boot for wider calves that is flattering. I want one that fits without pinching the calf. I would not want a scrunched boot that would add width visually. If the boot is stretch, it should come in a size that fits properly. If it is an open fit, it should have enough width to fit but not so much that the calf swims in it. Of course, the higher the heel, the more length is provided visually. If high heels are not your thing, try to find one that is monochromatic. This can add length visually.”
