Michael Bolton is healing after brain surgery and still not taking anything for granted as a source exclusively tells Closer he’s grateful and happy he’s alive after the toughest 12 months of his life.
“He’s friendly with his ex, Maureen [McGuire] and wants to spend time with her and their daughters and appreciate the moments, which are even more precious to him after what he’s been through,” the insider said.
The iconic 71-year-old singer told fans in January 2024 he had a brain tumor that would require surgery and extensive recovery time, forcing him to cancel all of his shows throughout 2024. The surgery was a “complete success,” but still left the “When a Man Loves a Woman” singer weakened for the better part of last year.
“Just before the holidays, it was discovered that I had a brain tumor, which required immediate surgery,” Michael wrote on Facebook. “Thanks to my incredible medical team, the surgery was a success.”
“It is always the hardest thing for me to ever disappoint my fans or postpone a show, but have no doubt I am working hard to accelerate my recovery and get back to performing soon,” he added.
But now, after months of recovery, Michael seems to be back to his old self. He posted photos with his family over the holidays looking healthy.
“I am beyond grateful for all the love and support you have so generously shown me through the years. Know that I’m keeping your positive messages in my heart, and I’ll give you more updates as soon as I can,” Michael said, thanking his many fans.
The source says it was missing out on his live performances that really kicked him when he was down. “It was tough going, but he’s doing better and ready to get back on stage and perform for his fans. He misses his fans.”
With new shows coming later in January, Michael will be taking it easy for a while, but is still eager to get back into the full swing of things. “It’s just a few shows he’s doing; he’s not pushing himself too hard,” the source tells.
“Everyone’s been so supportive. Michael knows he’s been given a second chance at life and he’s going to make the most of it and not take anything or anyone for granted again.”
The multi-platinum singer recently released a new album, Spark of Light, which he said was inspired by witnessing the need for positivity during the COVID pandemic and his desire to bring more light and optimism into the world.
“We were basically observing our friends and family and seeing that they all really needed some light, that it was so dark and oppressive, and basically we were all just carrying layers of fear to our every day,” he said of the album.
“And so we started to feel a sense of responsibility to deliver hope and promise and all these feelings that seem to be so elusive, and it started to become a feel-good record.”
