Robert Pattinson’s Mickey 17 press tour has all of his fans in an absolute chokehold. Not only has he mastered the art of aegyo, he got what everyone wants when visiting Seoul—a personal color analysis. If you’ve been on TikTok at all recently, you’ve definitely come across this trend. And although Rob’s color analysis might’ve just been another way to promote his new film, it’s making me want my own analysis even more than I already did.
Robert Pattinson’s first trip to Korea has been jam-packed, to say the least. Along with attending events and eating spicy Korean food—his color analysis has to be one of my favorite side quests ever. His upcoming film Mickey 17 is already generating tons of buzz, and even though all of this is just an attempt to raise awareness of its upcoming release—stan Twitter can’t get enough of Rob’s commitment to the bit. (Or maybe, it’s not a bit at all.)
As silly as it is to see Mr. Batman/Edward Cullen have a super determined look on his face as he finds out which colors suit him best—getting a personal color analysis is a actually a huge thing in Korea, and it’s become super popular on TikTok. Although some of us prefer to wear colors regardless of whether or not they “look good” on us, you’d be surprised to find out how many people are dying to be in Rob’s shoes. If you’re not familiar with the process, it might look a little strange—but there’s some serious science that goes into finding the right color palette for you.
What Is a Personal Color Analysis?
To sum it up, a personal color analysis is intended to determine which colors suit you best depending on your skin’s undertone. While it can definitely help you decide which colors to wear, it’s also used to determine things like makeup shades and hair color. Just like how people in the 2000s would refer to themselves as an “autumn” or a “summer,” a color analysis is all about discovering which shades flatter your skin tone. However, now it’s way more complicated than just picking one of the four seasons. Color analyses are meant to be super thorough and way more personalized than the four-season color theory. (Not everyone can fit into four categories? Shocker.)
How Does a Personal Color Analysis Work?
If you’ve ever attempted to color match yourself for a foundation, you’ve probably come across the terms cool, neutral, and warm. These are indicators of your skin’s undertone and are a big part of finding your personal color palette. At a personal color analysis, your consultant can help determine your undertone by holding up different shades to your face. Depending on your undertone, different colors can either complement your features or make them appear dull.
Can You Do Your Own Personal Color Analysis?
If you’re not an international movie star like Robert Pattinson, traveling to Seoul for a color analysis might be out of the question. Thankfully, you can still figure out which colors suit you best at home. Some TikTokers have gone as far as buying tons of different colored fabrics to mimic the experience of a Korean color analysis studio, but that isn’t completely necessary. Instead, try to identify your undertone first. Some people find that identifying the color of your veins is the most straightforward way to dictate whether you’re cool, neutral, or warm-toned. As a general rule of thumb, people with blueish veins are typically cool or neutral-toned. While people with greenish veins are typically warm-toned.
Once you find your undertone, your color palette will correspond with that undertone. For example, I’m neutral, so the most flattering colors on me don’t have a super strong warm or cool undertone. On the other hand, people with a cool undertone will better suit cool colors. After identifying your undertone, you can start experimenting with colors until you find the ones that look best. And once your color analysis is complete, all that’s left to do is give thanks to the aegyo king Robert Pattinson.
