A feature by Time revealed that the third season would be “grander, more epic – and much, much darker.”
Mike confirmed as much, saying that the earlier seasons set him up for success. “I do feel like the other seasons were a rehearsal for this one,” he explained. “There’s stuff that I’ve never directed before.”
He added that the new characters were “all in some kind of hurt. Like, they’re all dead, but they don’t know it.”
The way that they deal with their problems and the addition of Buddhist themes from the setting ensured that the new episodes “just got more heavy.”
Another difference will be the absence of Jennifer Coolidge, who was one of a very select number of stars to appear in the first two seasons. Her departure will be felt this time around. However, Mike was optimistic that he filled the gap.
“There’s definitely some performances I feel rival her as far as hopefully iconic performances,” he told the outlet.
Elsewhere in the interview, Mike revealed how many more seasons of The White Lotus he’d like to make.
