Sunny Hostin got emotional about experiencing a loss in her family during a segment on The View about heart health.
Star Jones joined the panel as an American Heart Association national volunteer to kick off a segment about American Heart Month on Wednesday, February 5.
“I had open-heart surgery 14 years ago,” Star, 63, said, adding that late The View creator Barbara Walters also had open heart surgery. “I’m a survivor and a thriver because my life has obviously improved.”
She told the hosts about how making changes to your diet and exercise routine could help prevent such health issues.
“It’s no magic bullet: eating better, getting some exercise,” she continued. “I was the most sedentary, lazy human being on the planet. Now my butt is out there, working out, because I don’t have a choice.”
“Know your numbers. Like, what your blood pressure is, what your good and your bad cholesterol is, what your blood sugar level are,” Star said. “This should be the time. Go get an EKG. They actually have those in most insurance plans now. It’s preventative care.”

The TV personality said that people should stop smoking because it’s “the dumbest, most expensive, ridiculously life-threatening habit there is.”
Star said that the biggest thing for her in getting her health in line was finding ways to reduce her stress and said that getting enough sleep is very important to reduce your risk of cardiovascular issues.
As the segment moved along, moderator Whoopi Goldberg looked around, seemingly waiting for a producer to say something in her earpiece. But it was silent. Sunny, who had tears welling in her eyes, then revealed that her aunt died the day prior.
“I’m sorry, my aunt died yesterday of a heart attack,” she said.
“I’m so sorry, Sunny,” cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin said.
“Oh I didn’t know that,” Star said while comforting Sunny, 56. Sunny then asked Alyssa, 35, if she could take her question as she continued to cry.
Alyssa then introduced a clip from Star’s show, Divorce Court. Star started talking about how Divorce Court is “the last of the court shows to use real people in real situations in real time.”
“What happened when you shared with me that you lost somebody dear to you, my job is to be empathetic to the people at Divorce Court,” Star told Sunny after the clip played. “The litigants that come before me to let them know they’re not alone in their relationship drama or trauma and that somebody is there for you to help you get through it.”
She joked that it was the strangest transition she has ever made on TV before before offering Sunny a message of solace amid her grief. “Understand that your aunt is at home with her God and we are here to fulfill her legacy,” Star said.
“I’m sorry everyone,” Sunny said as she continued to wipe her tears away.
“Do not worry about stuff like that. We’re your girls. You’re supposed to be vulnerable with your girls. That’s what it’s about,” Star replied, which garnered a round of applause from the audience.
