Secrets Are No Fun: Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) spilled the baby beans to Chase (Josh Swickard), while Brennan now knows that Josslyn (Eden McCoy) took Cyrus’s life.
Why stop at one huge storyline development when you can feature two in the same episode? That’s the approach General Hospital took in scripting the game-changing episode that aired on Thursday, February 20. In the dramatic hour, Brook Lynn finally came clean to her husband, Chase, about having secretly given birth in the past, and Josslyn shot Cyrus dead — then summoned WSB chief Jack Brennan to the scene of the crime! Soap Opera Digest checked in with the show’s head writers, Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten, about what fans can expect in the aftermath of these major moments.
Cyrus’s Death And Its Fallout For Josslyn, Brennan, Carly And Jason!
On the Cyrus front, Korte and Van Etten shared, “Cyrus’s death serves as a critical turning point in several lives — primarily Josslyn’s. She’s proved able to track down Dex’s killer and just as importantly, to save her own life when Cyrus threatened her. But she didn’t do it entirely alone. Brennan has been in the background all along, providing a nudge here and a morsel of information there. We’ll soon learn why. Brennan’s presence in Port Charles and his proximity to Carly is no accident. His feelings for Carly are accidental, though — and those feelings will come into direct conflict with his intentions for Josslyn.”
They continue, “The Spencer women will find themselves plunged into a world totally alien to them — Brennan’s world. But General Hospital fans know that other characters on the canvas are well-acquainted with Brennan’s business. A number of Port Charles residents will be pulled into this developing story as loyalties, friendships, and families will be called into question, present loves tested, new loves emerge, and many lives threatened… Jason among them! Josslyn’s act — and Brennan’s assistance — puts our hero’s freedom on the line… and elicits suspicion about exactly what happened to Cyrus, and who made it happen.”
The writers also expressed their admiration to the exiting Daytime Emmy-winner who brought Cyrus to life (and death). “Our hats are off to Jeff Kober,” they enthused. “He brought an intensity, panache, and dignity to the role of Cyrus. We’re grateful for his contribution, and excited to see how Cyrus’s family grapples with his fate in the months to come.”
Brook Lynn And Dante’s Secret Son
At this juncture in the “Brook Lynn secretly had a son with Dante” storyline, the audience (and Lois) knows that Gio is Brook Lynn and Dante’s child, and Chase has just learned that Brook Lynn gave birth in the past, but Gio and Dante are wholly in the dark — and Brook Lynn is likewise clueless that Gio is the child she gave away for adoption.
According to the writers, “Brook Lynn and Dante’s shared youth — all having taken place off-screen — is too rich with possibility to resist. Dante and Cody have implied that there’s a part of their growing-up years the audience ought to know about. Now that we know what it is — Brook Lynn and Dante had an illicit teenage relationship — we can now learn that there’s more to it than a youthful indiscretion… the relationship resulted in a pregnancy, and the baby was given away in a closed adoption.”
They continue, “Lois and Brook Lynn have long kept this secret, with able assistance from Gloria. But there’s still another secret layered in: Brook Lynn was led to believe her son was given away to strangers. But Lois and Gloria schemed to keep the baby in the family, delivering him to a distant Cerullo cousin. Brook Lynn has no idea that her long-lost son grew up right before her eyes. Gio is a fine young man, doted on by all his family, the apple of many an eye.”
Chase has a big reaction to what Brook Lynn shares with him. “When Brook Lynn finally confesses all to Chase (all that she knows of, anyway), he’s rightly furious,” the scribes share. “Not at Brook Lynn, but at the situation. He hates to think of the pain his wife underwent; and it kills him even now to see her turmoil over the son she gave up, the son she’ll never know. The only biological child she may ever have, thanks to Chase’s own medical setback.”
But the story is about to take a big turn. Reveal Korte and Van Etten, “As it stands, this situation might be endured. But we haven’t accounted for Lulu. She’s got her parents’ nose for mystery, and won’t stand for injustice. If she learns Dante has a kid, and that kid’s existence was kept from him, Lulu would stop at nothing to bring it to light… Lois and Brook Lynn be damned. The truth about Gio’s heritage would rock the Quartermaines, the Corinthoses, the Cerullos, the Falconeris, and Gio himself… but would anyone thank Lulu for it?”
