Davante Adams belongs in the conversation of the NFL’s elite receivers. The Packers snagged him in the second round back in 2014, and while he showed promise as a rookie, an ankle injury slowed him down in 2015.
Since then? The man’s been unstoppable. Adams is knocking on the door of the exclusive 1,000-catch club with 957 receptions already. He’s racked up 11,844 yards and found the end zone 103 times — that touchdown total puts him 10th all-time, ahead of legends like Don Hutson and Tim Brown.
The former Fresno State star’s journey took him from Green Bay to Las Vegas in 2022. After two-plus seasons with the Raiders, he was shipped to the Jets mid-season in 2024 to reunite with Aaron Rodgers. Now it looks like he’s about to be on the move again.
What’s next for the star wideout?
Adams turns 32 before next season, but don’t mistake that for a career decline — he’s still producing at an elite level. The situation in New York has changed dramatically with Aaron Glenn taking over as head coach and the Jets’ surprising decision to move on from Rodgers.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini recently broke down Adams’ situation: “Adams indicated at the end of the season that his future with the team was tied to Rodgers. He’s under contract for two more years, but he won’t have to request his release. It will happen because his 2025 cap charge is prohibitive—$38.3 million, none of it guaranteed. The only way to stay is to renegotiate the deal, and he probably prefers to be released, allowing him to test free agency for the first time.”
The writing’s on the wall.
Jets GM Darren Mougey didn’t exactly squash those rumors on Tuesday:
Darren Mougey is asked where the Jets stand on Davante Adams:
“Davante is on the team right now. We have a plan there. In the next few weeks, we’ll address that issue.” pic.twitter.com/U2VhWQ34le

With the new NFL fiscal year starting in just two weeks, that “plan” could mean several things. Adams’ massive $38.3 million cap hit makes a release almost inevitable — unless there’s a restructure in the works. But why would Adams agree to that without Rodgers in the picture?
The real intrigue begins with where Adams lands next. Could a return to Green Bay be in the cards? The six-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro spent eight seasons with the Packers, forming one of the league’s most lethal QB-WR duos with Rodgers. Jordan Love could certainly use a veteran target of Adams’ caliber.
Adams recently stirred the pot with some social media activity that had Packers fans dreaming of a reunion. While we’ve seen plenty of stars return to their original teams — think Jason Kelce in Philadelphia or Matthew Stafford in Detroit — nothing’s guaranteed in NFL free agency.
One thing’s certain — wherever Adams lands, he’ll immediately upgrade that team’s receiving corps. The Packers won’t be the only team calling when he officially becomes available.
