Anyone who has been seriously listening to Wiz Khalifa the last couple of months knows the hunger with which he’s putting music out. A chain of freestyles, remixes, and not to mention the exquisite verse on J. Cole’s ‘cLOUDs’ — all part of a fantastic roll out for his next album.
Now, he has taken things a notch higher with his latest track, ‘Billionaires,’ which is produced by the legendary Conductor Williams, featuring a verse from Ty Dolla $ign.
The rappers, an unlikely duo on an introspective sample chopped beat with minimalist drum programming, do it absolute justice as they speak about their road to success. Rapping in a laid back, relaxed stupor, the rappers glide confidently over the opulent sonic bed crafted by Conductor Williams in order to bring forth a sound that is both commercially palatable yet niche.
The music video is shot in a freehand cam format, with a strong flash aesthetic that highlights and keeps in focus the rappers in an otherwise dark room.
The result is a video that does not try too hard to achieve a cohesion with the music, where Wiz talks about waking up in Balenciaga and living lavish like it’s day to day. The rappers become the central highlight as they party, smoke, and weave confident nostalgia into a statement demonstrating what’s to come in their musical journey — one that’s far from over.
