Hugh Jackman is head over heels for girlfriend Sutton Foster and thrilled they’ve finally gone public. It’s one step towards a trip to the altar that he’s hoping will happen as soon as summer, an insider tells Closer exclusively.
“Hugh had a lot of back and forth while he was in Australia for the holidays but ultimately, he realized how much he missed her. The magic came flooding back when they reunited and ultimately marriage is the end game for these two. Hugh is clear he wants to make Sutton his wife,” the source reveals.
The issue standing in the way is Hugh and Sutton’s splits from their respective spouses. That “will of course impact the timing of when they can marry. But as soon as they are both free and clear they want to walk down the aisle,” the insider explains.
Before Hugh, 56, can tie the knot with Sutton, 49, he needs to get a divorce from estranged wife Deborra-Lee Furness. The former couple announced their separation after 27 years of marriage in September 2024. Neither has filed for divorce as of Friday, January 31. The duo shares two adopted children. Son Oscar joined the family in 2000, followed by the adoption of daughter Ava in 2005.
Unlike Hugh, Sutton is in the process of legally ending her marriage. The Broadway star filed for divorce from Ted Griffin, her husband of nearly 10 years, on October 22, 2024. The former couple share a daughter, Emily, whom the former couple welcomed via adoption in 2017.
After months of dating speculation, Hugh and Sutton made their romance official when they were spotted holding hands as they stepped out for dinner in Santa Monica, California, on January 6. Six days later, the couple was photographed kissing in a car while waiting in the drive-thru line at an In-N-Out restaurant in Los Angeles on January 12.
“They both had a lot of anxiety about going public but at some point. It had to be done and, in a way, it does feel better now that they’re in the open,” the source says of Hugh and Sutton affirming their romance.
“Hugh would love to put a ring on her finger right now and privately he has said that but publicly he will wait to make any moves until everything is settled in both of their splits. The optics of going too quickly wouldn’t be good, but the sooner they’re both officially divorced, the sooner they can marry,” the insider adds.
The pair confirmed their couple status again when Sutton was in the audience watching Hugh perform during the opening night of his concert series – From New York, With Love – on January 24. She joined the star’s best friend, Ryan Reynolds, at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.
The fellow Tony Award winners grew close after starring together in a revival of Broadway’s The Music Man. The production ran from December 2021 to January 2023.
“Hugh and Sutton were both ready for changes in their lives,” a source exclusively told Closer on January 22, about how they became a couple. “Unfortunately, sacrifices had to be made. They did give up a lot, but they feel that time will reveal that it was worth it.”
“It’s tough navigating the end of a marriage and the start of a new romance, but Sutton’s clearly in love with him. You can see it in her face and body language,” said the insider. “Hugh is harder to read because he always wants everyone to be happy, but it’s an exciting time for him.”
