In 1994, GH’s Maxie Jones (Robyn Richards, pictured with John J. York as Mac Scorpio and Kristina Wagner as Felicia Jones) was diagnosed with Kawasaki Syndrome. The little girl’s failing health had led to her hospitalization, and Felicia was devastated to get the news that her daughter was suffering from a life-threatening illness. Maxie’s diagnosis was a key turn in what would ultimately prove to be one of the show’s most critically acclaimed and heartbreaking medical storylines — Maxie needing a heart transplant and receiving the organ that saved her life from her young cousin, BJ Jones, who was rendered brain-dead in a school bus accident.

In 2011, Days of Our Lives‘s Justin Kiriakis (Wally Kurth) and Adrienne Johnson (Judi Evans) got engaged (again). The duo had only recently gotten back together, and hadn’t yet even informed their children of their reunion. They went for a stroll in the park, and Justin mustered his nerve to pop the question to his two-time ex-wife. “I just had this scene in my head. And then I started thinking, I don’t even know what you’re going to say,” he began. “So, maybe I should just find out. Adrienne, will you marry me… for a third time?” Adrienne took little convincing, beaming, “I want to be your wife again more than anything in the world!” Justin then slipped her engagement ring back on her finger (he’d thoughtfully had it engraved to say “a new beginning”).

in 2012 on Bold and Beautiful, Liam Spencer pressed Steffy Forrester, to whom he was married, to sign the annulment papers that would clear his path to the future with Hope Logan that he desired. Steffy decided it was time to throw in the towel on the union — but once she was alone and poised to sign the papers, her father-in-law, Bill Spencer, showed up at her door. “I wouldn’t do that,” he warned. Bill encouraged Steffy to delay dissolving the union, confident she could win Liam back.

In 2017, General Hospital‘s Robin Scorpio-Drake (Kimberly McCullough) was in dire straits: Olivia Jerome had strapped her to a bomb. Jason Morgan and Anna Devane were desperate to save her, and bickered over the best course of action to accomplish this. Eventually, Jason managed to free Robin by assuming her position (as the plate beneath Robin required pressure in order to prevent the bomb from detonating).

In 2020, Young and Restless‘s Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) and Sharon Newman (Sharon Case), whose relationship has primarily been a prickly one through the years, shared a rare moment of connection as Sharon opened up to Nikki about her fears in the wake of her breast cancer diagnosis. Nikki encouraged Sharon to fight her disease the way she had always fought Nikki. “I’m tougher than cancer,” said Nikki. “And so are you.” Marveled Sharon, “Look at us. Who would ever believe this?” Winked Nikki, “Well, it’s a good thing nobody will ever know.”
